Guy Fawkes Day = Gunpowder Day

Date When Celebrated : Always November 5th

Guy Fawkes Day and Gunpowder Day are one and the same. It commemorates the infamous Gunpowder Conspiracy of 1605 in England. It was led by, you guessed it, Guy Fawkes.

The Roots of Gunpowder Day or Guy Fawkes Day

In 1603, King James I took the throne in England. An avid Protestant, he began persecuting Catholics in the country. He forbid Catholics from practicing their religion ,and punished Catholics who did not convert to the Protestant church.

The Gunpowder Conspirators were a group of Catholics who sought to take action against the king. They plotted to blow up the British Houses of Parliament. They planned to do so, when the king and his supporters were in the buildings. Their plot was uncovered on November 5, 1605. Thirty six barrels of gunpowder were found in the basement of Parliament. Guy Fawkes, the leader of the conspiracy, was arrested and tortured until he confessed. He was arrested just as he was about to ignite the gunpowder.

How do people in England celebrate Gunpowder Day? They do so, with fireworks and bonfires.

Thought for the Day: Are we celebrating Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators, for attempting to eliminate religious persecution? Or, are we celebrating the government's successful discovery of the plot, saving many lives? ...You make the call.

Origin of Guy Fawkes Day:We know the origin of the cause for this special day. We do not know when this special day began to be celebrated. It likely began in the 1600s.

Note: This special day lends proof the the theory that notoriety results in recognition.

Men Make Dinner Day

Date When Celebrated : First Thursday in November

National Men Make Dinner Day was created for two reasons. First, it is to give the ladies a break from the cooking chores. Secondly, it seeks to encourage men who do not cook, to learn to cook, beginning by making a meal on this day. Of course, even men who do cook, should celebrate this day by making a meal. For the experienced male cook, we encourage you to make something challenging.

It is also called Make Your Wife Dinner Day.

Okay guys, be a sport. Give the ladies in your life a break. Set them in their favorite chair in the living room, put a glass of wine in their hands, and tune the Tv to their favorite "Chick Flick". Then, grab a beer, find a recipe and make dinner all by yourself!

Here are a few Do's and Don'ts for making the meal:
The Golden Rule: Women can not assist in the meal. Rookie male cooks need to do it all by themselves, to gain a sense of accomplishment.
No take out or prepared foods are allowed
No grilling. After all, you've been telling yourself for years, that grilling is Man's turf.
If you've never cooked before, make it simple. If you like to cook, do something challenging.
Prepare something that the ladies will like.
The meal must include a dessert. May we suggest easy to make jello? Add a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry.
You must clean up all the pots pans and mixing bowls used in preparing the meal.

Why Should Men Cook Today?
Because you love your wife or partner.
To broaden your horizon and skill set.
To score points!

Origin of Men Make Dinner Day:
The creators of this day is not known. Nor, is the date when it originated. Our research suggest that this special day may have originated fairly recently.

There are no Presidential or Congressional proclamations making this an official "National" day.

Homemade Bread Day

Date When Celebrated : Always November 17

Bakers of the world, rise up and bake some bread, for today is Homemade Bread Day.

Bread has been made for thousands of years. Estimates date it's origin back to 5000-10,000 B.C. Modern day lifestyles has relegated homemade bread to the world of specialty baking and holiday baking. People just don't have time to bake home made bread. We turn to a quick "run" to bakeries and grocery stores, for our bread needs. The arrival of automatic bread makers has created a small resurgence of home made breads, especially specialty breads.

The purpose of this day is easy to understand.--- to make home made bread, and to encourage you and me to make tasty and nutritious bread. So, take a little time out of your busy day, and make some bread. Your nose, your taste buds, and your whole family will be glad you did.

Happy Homemade Bread Day!

Flower of the Day: Amaranth

Recipe of the Day: Pumpkin Nut Bread

Origin of Homemade Bread Day:From our research, it appears that this special day is sponsored by the Homemade Bread Day Committee of Montague, Mi. We did not find their website. So we have yet to uncover more information about this special day.

Site Vistior Comment:

I would guess it started in the mid 1970s when most commercial bakeries jacked the price of bread from about 40 cents or so a loaf to a dollar or so. the women of America revolted and started baking at home in record numbers. Enough that the price of commercial bread dropped back within a very short time. Damn shame they couldn’t do it again with many other items. I was working in a grocery store at the time and I remember it fairly well. ... Bill H.

Go For a Ride Day

When : Always November 22

Go For a Ride Day is today. And, what a splendid time you will have!

As the holidays approach, life becomes chaotic, and perhaps a bit stressful. Take a breather, and go for a relaxing ride. You don't need a destination to enjoy this day. But, you certainly can bring family or friends along for company.

The means of transportation can be anything. Sure, a car, bus, or motorcycle ride may immediately come to mind. Here are some other ways of riding, that may prove more fun than the family vehicle:
Take a sleigh ride.Ride a horse.Ride a horse-drawn carriage.Snowmobile rides are always "cool".A bicycle is a great, way to ride and exercise.A boat ride, if your are a warmer climate.Doesn't a plane ride to a sunny vacation spot sound like fun!?You can't ride in my little red wagon. Okay, you can ride in it.

Whatever your means of transportation, have a happy Go For a Ride Day.

National Espresso Day

Date When Celebrated : Always November 23Looking for a quick caffeine high? Well, you are in luck because today is National Espresso Day, and a cup of espresso should do the trick.

The Espresso Machine was first invented in Italy by Luigi Bezzera in 1901. Luigi's goal, was decrease the time of his employee's coffee breaks, and subsequently increase productivity. His espresso machine accomplished this goal, and went beyond, creating a thick, bold, coffee that has become very popular.

Espresso machines use steam to force hot water through the coffee grounds, to make coffee faster, with a stronger flavor, and more body. It is topped with a delicate foam called "crema". Coffee used for Espresso is ground finer.

Did You Know? Espresso is the base ingredient for capuccino, lattes, and macchiato.

It is very easy and enjoyable and relaxing to participate in National Espresso Day. If your Espresso machine is not already sitting on your kitchen counter, drag it out of its basement storage location, dust it off, and make some Espresso. If you don't have an Espresso machine, that's okay. Walk or drive to your nearest coffee shop or cafe, and order one!

Origin of National Espresso Day:We have not yet discovered who created National Espresso Day. Like so many other food related holidays, it seems this day was created, once promoted, and its history never properly recorded.

We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation creating this day as a national day.

We do wonder why the creator established this as a "National" day. One would think this day should have been called a "World" or "International" Espresso Day, as it was invented in Italy, and is enjoyed around the world.
